A Spring Garden Party Wedding

Blog5

Prince Edward Island is abloom and I can’t think of a better way to kick off the flowering season than a garden party inspired wedding.   The beginning of new love is celebrated with burgeoning blossoms fresh from the garden.  Watercolour hues abound while the fragrance of lily of the valley mingling with lilac is heavenly; utterly enchanting, blissfully romantic.

Wear Your Heart on Your Sleeve…Or Lapel ~ Corsages & Boutonnieres

We are in the midst of the Prom season here in Prince Edward Island.  Blushing youth, elegant gowns and tailored tuxedos abound!

Image

Our fingers have been busy picking, wiring and taping.  Each corsage and boutonniere is a  little piece of art from the garden.  I love seeing flowers adorning wrists and lapels; Mother Nature provides the best accessories.  Blousey begonias coupled with lichen, rosebuds and dusty miller, dripping with pieris and lily of the valley as though they were pearls.  Nothing makes us happier than marking life’s milestones with unforgettable flowers.

Tulip Season

Image

This is the perfect week to pull on a pair of rubber boots and head out to some local growers.  The tulips are spectacular right now in Prince Edward Island and the fields are vibrant patchwork quilts that beckon everyone to stop, take pictures and soak in the beauty.

There is an opportunity for the whole family to pick their own tulips this weekend at Prince Edward Island’s Points East Tulip Festival. Load the kids in the car and head to Balderston’s Farm where they have teamed up with Vanco Farm to offer a You-Pick tulip field.  Sunday afternoon will feature  local Island artisans, music and food.  And the best part is that a portion of the proceeds will go to The Easter Seals.

More information on The Points East Tulip Festival can be found at  http://www.pointseastcoastaldrive.com/

Learning To Love…Carnations

I’m starting to realize that I’m fickle…maybe it’s more that I am easily swayed to change my mine by something beautiful (at least that is a more poetic way to look at it).  I was definitely in the league of florists that stuck up our collective noses when the word carnation dared to be uttered in our presence.  In my defence, carnations of old were not very romantic; starchy petals in less than enchanting colours.  They were everywhere from hospital gift shops to convenience store cash and carries; substantially lacking an awe factor.

But then my head was turned by this stunning carnation variety, named Dolce Vita. With its vintage tea stained petals that I simply adore, this newcomer has taught me to never say never when it comes to flowers.  That may be what I like the best about what I do!

The Ever Romantic Ranunculus

One of my perennial favourites is the multi petal, stunningly romantic ranunculus.  Even though the day for expressing our love has come and gone, this little darling of the garden keeps romance in the air. From the smallest fragile pinkish green varieties to the fleshy, bold double petal varieties; they are all breathtakingly enchanting.

Ranuculas 1

Ranunculus is a flower that slowly reveals itself as it matures (much like an enduring relationship). Starting as a dainty globe of petals and transforming into a ruffled, voluptuous head of paper-thin petals adorned by a silky center; Classically beautiful, understated and quintessentially feminine.

So, I figure it is time to start growing these lovelies on the farm.  February is the perfect month to start thinking about breaking ground; planning and preparing for the upcoming summer garden is what gets most of us through the blustery winters.  Ranunculus, scented geranium, oregano, mint and foxglove are all on my list this year.  I cannot wait to tuck these sweethearts into this years bridal bouquets and spread the love!
