Megan & Matt…A Beach Wedding

Image

Couples come from far and wide to be surrounded by this lovely and enchanting Island on their special day.  This particular affair was windswept and breathtaking with the best elements that the island has to offer; pristine farmlands bordered by red cliffs and an endless shoreline.  With a tent perched on the edge of a field, a sandy path invites family and friends to the ceremony on the beach.  Swaying beach grass, billowing clouds and a celebration with those nearest and dearest.  Congratulations Megan and Matt!

Meredith Lynn & Dave

This wedding was a pure pleasure to work on. Lavender callas mixed with voluptuous snow white roses, dainty Eskimo roses, bupleurum and wild oregano were carried by the ladies. The men wore the most charming star fish boutonnieres coupled with bear grass and galax leaves. Perfect in every way!

Wild Blueberry Boutonniere

Wild Blueberry Boutonniere

Some designs are a bit more adventurous than others. A trek through a bog with bugs a-buzzing and thorny wild rose bushes waiting to claw at whoever dares get too near is what this florist will endure to get one of her favourite textures. Bogs are always interesting undertakings but I may have to find a cultivated source without the hazards of bugs, beasts and thorns. But on this cool cloudy day in July, it was well worth the effort to make these charming little boutonnieres.

Well, Hello There Summer

Image

With wedding season in full swing I am still able to get out and play in the garden; or the gardens of others, as I was able to do this past week. Peonies are in full bloom and all manner of lovely little textures are bursting from every flower bed.  Old fashioned garden roses are heavy with perfume and petals and the light scent of mock orange is the sweetest scent in this whole wide world.

Intoxicating to all the senses, summer is finally here and is dressed in the most charming of flowers.

A Spring Garden Party Wedding

Blog5

Prince Edward Island is abloom and I can’t think of a better way to kick off the flowering season than a garden party inspired wedding.   The beginning of new love is celebrated with burgeoning blossoms fresh from the garden.  Watercolour hues abound while the fragrance of lily of the valley mingling with lilac is heavenly; utterly enchanting, blissfully romantic.

Wear Your Heart on Your Sleeve…Or Lapel ~ Corsages & Boutonnieres

We are in the midst of the Prom season here in Prince Edward Island.  Blushing youth, elegant gowns and tailored tuxedos abound!

Image

Our fingers have been busy picking, wiring and taping.  Each corsage and boutonniere is a  little piece of art from the garden.  I love seeing flowers adorning wrists and lapels; Mother Nature provides the best accessories.  Blousey begonias coupled with lichen, rosebuds and dusty miller, dripping with pieris and lily of the valley as though they were pearls.  Nothing makes us happier than marking life’s milestones with unforgettable flowers.

Have Flowers, Will Travel ~ A Charming Boston Wedding

Here is one from the archives.

This classic wedding brought simple garden sensibility to the heart of Boston.  A backdrop of historic Boston brownstones made this wedding a delight to work on!  Sahara roses, hydrangea, dahlia, calla lily and sedum in lush posies dressed the tables while the bride and her ladies carried simple rose and hydrangea nosegays.  Simple understated elegance in one of the best little cities in the world.  We love you Boston!

Tulip Season

Image

This is the perfect week to pull on a pair of rubber boots and head out to some local growers.  The tulips are spectacular right now in Prince Edward Island and the fields are vibrant patchwork quilts that beckon everyone to stop, take pictures and soak in the beauty.

There is an opportunity for the whole family to pick their own tulips this weekend at Prince Edward Island’s Points East Tulip Festival. Load the kids in the car and head to Balderston’s Farm where they have teamed up with Vanco Farm to offer a You-Pick tulip field.  Sunday afternoon will feature  local Island artisans, music and food.  And the best part is that a portion of the proceeds will go to The Easter Seals.

More information on The Points East Tulip Festival can be found at  http://www.pointseastcoastaldrive.com/

Learning To Love…Carnations

I’m starting to realize that I’m fickle…maybe it’s more that I am easily swayed to change my mine by something beautiful (at least that is a more poetic way to look at it).  I was definitely in the league of florists that stuck up our collective noses when the word carnation dared to be uttered in our presence.  In my defence, carnations of old were not very romantic; starchy petals in less than enchanting colours.  They were everywhere from hospital gift shops to convenience store cash and carries; substantially lacking an awe factor.

Image

But then my head was turned by this stunning carnation variety, named Dolce Vita. With its vintage tea stained petals that I simply adore, this newcomer has taught me to never say never when it comes to flowers.  That may be what I like the best about what I do!

Happy Mother’s Day!

During my time doing design work in Boston, my favourite flower holiday was Mother’s Day.  The sight of people bustling about the city streets with armloads of flowers to celebrate and give thanks to mom, mother, mummy or momma.

Dandelion1

These days I am reminded of the first blossom that was presented to me.  A sunny dandelion of course; which was given by small, muddy fingers with such pride from an innocent, open heart that only a child has.  I took special care to place it in a vase on the kitchen table so we could admire it and see how it closed and opened as the days went by. A simple thank you was given without knowing how impactful the gesture was.  What a lesson on how all gifts should be given and received!

Mother's Day 2013

As a mother, this day brings dual meaning – to celebrate and to be celebrated.  I often think about how we mark this day with my mother and how those memories have etched themselves into my life’s path.  When I was little, Mother’s Day often found my family mingling about our local greenhouse looking for the largest hanging Fushia in hopes of  enticing humming birds to visit my mother’s backyard garden.  Some years found us carting home apples trees, various varieties of peonies, rose bushes and  fanciful passion flower vines.  All to be fussed over and pampered by my mother’s hands; as if she needed more things to tend to.  Unknowingly she sowed the seeds for the love of flowers in both of her girls and it is certainly something to be grateful for.

Mother's Day
